Wild About '88: Chapter 32: Cook leads Cats in Olson’s 100th UA win.
March 3 1988 vs. Washington State
The Arizona Wildcats defeated Kelvin Sampson’s WSU Cougars in a 79-41 win at McKale Center, giving Lute Olson his 100th win at Arizona.
Anthony Cook led all Wildcats with 15 points, connecting on all six shots he took. That made 15 straight buckets without a miss during a three-game stretch. Through 17 PAC-10 games he has made 71% of his shots.
“The shot feels good,” Cook said. “I’ve been consistent in practice. And they’re looking for me inside.”1
Joe Turner was also perfect from the field. Finishing with 12 points off the bench.
The Wildcats forced 13 first-half turnovers and led at the break 41-15.
“We came in with the idea to play almost exclusively a man-to-man defense and pressure them,” Olson said. “I thought we really did a good job of that. We spent a lot of time this week in practice with the man-to-man and it really paid off for us.”2
The Gumby squad took advantage of the opportunity to show off their skills against the Cougars with Harvey Mason leading the lovable crew with 10 points.
“It was good to get a number of guys the number of minutes they had,” Olson said. “All the reserves on the second unit got double figures time wise.”3
The victory was the 27th of the season, setting a new school record.
